Our Lady of Mount Lebanon, Pray for Us

Today's Feast of the Annunciation is a public holiday in that Middle Eastern country where one of the official languages is European, even Romance, and where the Presidency and half the parliamentary seats are reserved for Christians, the Presidency for a Catholic.

But that country is under constant attack from her southern neighbour, where nothing remotely like any of that applies, and whose founders explicitly identified the Litani, well within the more northerly land, as their own natural northern frontier. This constitutes an existential threat pursued by military means.

Now, tell me, which of those is the West's outpost in the Levant, and which is, to put it no more strongly, something else altogether?
