As military types, especially Army, are pointedly wont to say, "renewing" Trident is a political decision. In other words, there is nothing strategic about it. It is purely about what politicians and voters want to own, as status symbols even if only in their own minds.
Put bluntly, it is a defensively useless, as well as a morally reprehensible, waste of money.
